This being said, the plot is important as it does not attempt to sugarcoat the realities of life. ![]() ![]() This element of the story offers a sense of realism and tragedy to the story that is often not present in children's books. Although it is heartwarming and optimistic in many ways, it also ends with a terrible tragedy, making it a somewhat unique plot for a children's book.Īfter keeping Old Yeller for some time, and developing a deep bond with him, Travis is forced to kill him after he is bitten by a rabid wolf.
