![]() ![]() I absolutely recommend this book as great change of pace from the classic vampire story. Nina has never even tasted human blood! Nina makes an interesting hero as she and some of her friends try to find a vampire hunter who staked one of the members of reformed vampire support group. ![]() ![]() Everything that this group of vampires does is to help them survive. Nina herself is weak and barely surviving on guinea pigs and supplements. She is able to survive by writing vampire novels- about a stylized, strong, good looking vampire who saves people. The only time she really gets out of the house is to go to her Tuesday night vampire support meetings at the local church. The main character is, of course, a teenage vampire named Nina who is actually in her fifties and living with her senior citizen mother. Catherine Jinks earned major creativity points in my book when instead of making her vampires strong and good looking she made them weak and pathetic. ![]() Now although I’ve already told you that I’m sick of vampires, I love when when an author can take something that everyone is familiar with and give it their own spin. It just happened to be in the school library, so I gave it a try. There was a ridiculous output of these books after Twilight made it big, and in my opinion, it was big time overkill! My YA book group recommended the title The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks as a monthly read. Honestly, I’ve been pretty sick of the vampire/werewolf genre for the last few years. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If anything, it is a family drama writ large and taken to an absurd level. Despite an appearance by Iron Man and references to a plethora of past events and characters, The Vision has very little to do with the larger Marvel world, and it is this distance and its sincere exploration of its dark subject matter that allows it to surpass its genre by leaps and bounds. ![]() In fact, there is little to no heroism in it at all. The Vision is not a traditional "superhero" comic book. And from that moment on, everything goes downhill. Everything seems to be going well at first, until a villain unexpectedly drops in while Vision is away. Their children, created as teenagers, need to attend a local high school in order to learn how to work with humans, and Virginia is waiting to hear back about job opportunities in order to keep herself occupied. They move into a new house in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., where Vision works as a liaison to the President. ![]() The Vision, the Marvel superhero and "synthezoid" who has spent years fighting alongside the Avengers (saving the world no less than 37 times by his own estimation), has chosen to create a family in order to continue his quest of becoming "normal." He crafts a wife named Virginia in the same way he himself was created (using the brainwaves from a human), and by combining the two of their brainwave patterns (remember, it's comics), they also bring forth their twin children, Vin and Viv. ![]() ![]() I’m not really sure what else I can say. The book had a very Gothic feel, without being to heavy and dreary and despite the fact that it’s a ghost story, I’d almost describe Ruined as a light read. Rebecca couldnt feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to spend the year while her dad is traveling. Really, what else could you ask for? I found the writing to be engaging, and the voodoo angle had me hooked from the beginning. A gripping YA supernatural novel set in New Orleans: Twilight with a ghostly twist. A quick, juicy, mysterious read filled with characters you aren’t sure about, an unsolved murder, deceit, lies and a cute boy. ![]() Which is weird, because I loves me a good ghost story. And Ruined? Yeah, it was a good ghost story. Meanwhile, Rebecca must deal with her snooty new prep school, a serious crush, and an elite group of popular girls who may be linked to the mystery themselves. ![]() A former slave, Lisette helps Rebecca unearth an ancient mystery along with some troubling history truths. Rebecca is also startled to discover a haunting of a different kind near a graveyard one night, she meets a ghost girl by the name of Lisette, who has been dead 150 years. When Rebecca goes to New Orleans to stay with her voodoo-obsessed aunt, she finds the beautiful old city haunted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. It’s called the Hanover Room, if you please, interrupted a prim, testy voice behind them. Now come with me, I’ve got a private celebration going on in the back room. Mitch wove his way through the merrymakers and pulled Josh and Adam into a big bear hug. Just then, Mitch, who was easily tall enough to see over the crowd, spotted them, and hollered, Hey! About time, you two. I guess you don’t celebrate a Supreme Court decision with black robes and solemnity. Adam, do you believe this? Josh tugged his lover forward to see the display.Īdam looked around the room, his face glowing. The middle of the book had some difficulty maintaining my interest, but the climax is absolutely epic and will satisfy readers who've invested in the story all the way to the end. From the first page to the thrilling climax, the conflict keeps escalating, the plot keeps twisting, and the stakes keep rising. ![]() While the pacing feels a bit uneven, there's always something happening. This being said, the plot is important as it does not attempt to sugarcoat the realities of life. ![]() ![]() This element of the story offers a sense of realism and tragedy to the story that is often not present in children's books.
