In an attempt to create a saga of his own, Faulkner has invented a host of characters typical of the historical growth and subsequent decadence of the South. Though his work was published as early as 1919, and largely during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner was not widely known until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel”, for which he became the only Mississippi-born Nobel winner.
